Bardhyl Demiraj was born in Tirana, where he finished his school- ing in 1976. His father, linguist Shaban Demiraj, instilled in him a passion for the historical development of his native language. From 1976 to 1981, he studied Albanian language and literature at the University of Tirana, finishing his master’s in 1982, and in 1984-1986 he specialized in Indo-European, Romanian, and Balkan linguistics at the University of Vienna. On his return to Tirana, Demiraj was appointed to the Institute of Linguistics and Literature of the Academy of Sciences as a research expert for the history of the Albanian language and onomastics. From December 1991 to August 1993, he did postgraduate research at the Linguis- tics Institute of the University of Bonn and finished his doctorate in Tirana in 1994 with a dissertation on the historical development of the number system in Albanian. In 1994-1995, he collaborated on a research project for an Indo-European dictionary under the direction of Robert Beekes in Leiden, Holland, and carried on with etymological research in Bonn until 2000. In March 2001, he was appointed professor of Albanian at the University of Munich. Bardhyl Demiraj is considered one of the leading experts in the field of Albanian etymology. Foremost among his publications is Albanische Etymologien: Untersuchungen zum albanischen Erb- wortschatz (Albanian Etymologies: Research into the Hereditary Vocabulary, Atlanta, 1997); Gjon P. Nikolle Kazazi dhe “Doktrina” e tij (Gjon P. Nikolle Kazazi and His “Doctrine”, Prishtina, 2006); and Dictionarium latino-epiroticum (Romae 1635) per R. D. Franciscum Blanchum (Shkodra, 2008).
